What changes before, during and after the decision
A bump option follows contract rules rather than automatically tracking market rates.
The starting APY may be lower than a plain CD.
The option matters only if rates rise enough and you exercise it correctly.
Define the bump
Record how many increases are allowed, which bank rate qualifies and whether maturity stays unchanged.
A bump is usually an option governed by the agreement, not an automatic match to every market increase. Identify the bank product that supplies the replacement rate, the number of permitted changes and the method for requesting one.
Measure the starting cost
Compare the initial APY with a standard CD. That yield gap is the price paid before any increase occurs.
Calculate the interest given up if the bump-up CD starts below a plain CD. That opening gap is certain; a later increase is not. Compare the two products across the same deposit amount and maturity date.
Set a trigger
Calculate how large and how early a bump must occur to overcome the lower starting yield.
Set a trigger before opening the account. A small increase late in the term may not recover months of lower earnings. Record the effective date after a request and save the confirmation so the new rate can be checked against the next statement.
Value the option, not its name
| Situation | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Rates never rise enough | The lower starting APY can lose. |
| Rates rise early | Calculate whether the bump recovers the initial gap. |
| Multiple bumps allowed | Plan triggers instead of using the first small change. |
Build the plan before the deadline
The timing plan in one view
A bump option follows contract rules rather than automatically tracking market rates.
Rates never rise enough: The lower starting APY can lose.
Ask whether the increase applies automatically or requires your request and when the new rate becomes effective.

Answers to check before you act
Does a bump-up CD rise whenever market rates rise?
Usually not automatically. The agreement defines eligible rates and required action.
Does bumping extend maturity?
Terms vary. Confirm whether the original maturity remains or another condition applies.
