Group by insured bank

Identify the chartered bank holding each deposit. Brand names, apps and branches can obscure when balances belong to one institution.

List the legal owners and each person's interest in every joint deposit at the same insured bank. Nicknames, branches and separate account numbers do not replace the ownership-category calculation. Review payable-on-death designations separately because they can follow another category.

Group by ownership category

Single, joint, trust and certain retirement accounts follow separate coverage rules when requirements are satisfied.

Add checking, savings and CDs held in the same category and allow room for accrued interest. Use the official estimator when ownership is unequal, beneficiaries are involved or other categories overlap.

Verify before moving large balances

Use the FDIC estimator or obtain guidance for complex ownership rather than relying on a simple account count.

Keep account titles and records current after a marriage, death or ownership change. Coverage depends on the actual deposit records and requirements, not the household's informal understanding of who the money belongs to.

Three boundaries to protect

Coverage is organized by depositor, insured bank and ownership category.

Accounts at branches of the same bank are not separately insured merely because the branches differ.

Accurate account records and ownership matter.

Answers to check before you act

Does each joint account get a separate limit?

Not simply. Coverage is calculated under the joint ownership category and applicable ownership rules across the bank.

Are two brands always two banks?

No. Verify the legal insured institution behind each brand or app.
