Use APY without being misled

APY standardizes compounding, but realized earnings still depend on balance, time and account rules.

Three differences that shape the answer

APY includes compounding over one year; the stated interest rate does not.

APY assumes the funds remain on deposit and interest stays in the account.

Fees and tier rules can reduce your realized return.

Why APY is the comparison number

Two accounts can state the same interest rate but compound on different schedules. APY translates that effect into an annualized yield. For deposit accounts with no fees and a stable rate, the higher APY produces more interest over a year.

APY converts the stated rate and compounding into a one-year comparison. Use it for like-for-like deposit offers, then verify that the quoted APY applies to the balance and conditions the reader expects to maintain.

Example with real cash

At 4.00% APY, a steady $10,000 balance earns about $400 over a full year before tax if the APY remains unchanged. A $10 monthly fee would consume $120, reducing the effective gain to roughly $280. That fee matters more than a small APY difference.

Turn a small percentage gap into dollars before switching. On a steady balance, fees or an ineligible tier can outweigh the extra interest. Keep the estimate separate from any claim that a variable APY will remain unchanged.

Variable means variable

Savings APYs can change after account opening. Record the date you checked, whether the rate applies to the entire balance, and any activity requirements. Recheck after central-bank moves or a promotional period ends.

Check when interest compounds, when it credits and whether a promotional or relationship condition applies. Those details affect cash flow and eligibility even when APY already reflects compounding math.
