Use the right insurance system
| Situation | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Bank deposit | Verify FDIC membership and category. |
| Credit-union share account | Verify federal share insurance and category. |
| Investment product | Do not assume deposit or share insurance applies. |
Three differences that shape the answer
FDIC covers eligible deposits at insured banks; NCUA administers federal share insurance for federally insured credit unions.
Coverage depends on institution, product and ownership category.
Investments sold by an insured institution are not automatically insured deposits or shares.
Verify the institution
Use the official bank or credit-union lookup rather than a logo copied onto a marketing page.
Start with the institution type. FDIC insurance applies to eligible deposits at insured banks, while NCUA share insurance applies to eligible accounts at federally insured credit unions. Neither label covers every financial product sold by an institution.
Verify the product
Savings, money market deposit/share accounts and certificates can qualify; securities and mutual funds follow different protections.
Compare ownership categories and aggregation at the actual institution. A similar basic limit does not mean every trust, retirement or joint arrangement is calculated identically without checking official guidance.
Calculate ownership correctly
Aggregate eligible balances by institution and ownership category, including accrued interest where applicable.
Verify coverage using BankFind or the credit-union locator and keep the institution's legal name. Investment products, crypto assets and money market mutual funds should not be presented as insured deposits merely because a bank or credit union offers access to them.
